Porsche’s first Super Bowl commercial in more than two decades is an epic ode to the brand’s past, present, and future. With its opening scene taking place within the halls of the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, the ad is chock full of great Porsches—including one unreleased model that was included as an Easter egg.

Yet, the 60-second spot, which previews a longer 123-second online ad, ultimately puts the spotlight on 10 specific Porsches, each of which represents an important moment in the brand’s history. Read through to find out what makes these vehicles so special to the German automaker.

Porsche Tractor

Porsche enters the tractor business in 1956 but abandons the segment in 1963. In that time, the company builds more than 125,000 tractors, the most powerful of which boasts a 55-hp engine.

Porsche 917 K

Porsche unveils its 917 endurance racer at the Geneva motor show in 1969. Months later, the 12-cylinder race car makes its way to Le Mans. Although it fails to finish, Porsche remains undeterred, and the 917 (now wearing the K designation for Kurzheck, or “short tail”) takes back-to-back checkered flags at the 1970 and 1971 Le Mans races.

Porsche 911 RSR

The 911 RSR enters the racing scene in 1973 at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Despite the newness of the model and the grueling nature of the race, the RSR proceeds to take the checkered flag. The lightweight Porsche and its 300-plus-hp turbocharged flat-six engine keep going, though, and the RSR takes the top podium at the 1973 running of the 12 Hours of Sebring and Targa Florio.

Porsche 911 Turbo (930)

Porsche turbocharges the 911 in 1975. Known as the 930, the 911 Turbo’s forced-induction flat-six produces 260 horsepower and boasts a rear-end that’s 0.4 inch wider than the standard car’s. The bigger tell that the 930 is no ordinary 911, though, comes in the form of its massive “whale tail” rear spoiler.

Porsche Carrera GT

Porsche takes the wraps off the Carrera GT concept at the 2000 Paris auto show. In 2003, the Carrera GT enters production. Power comes courtesy of a Formula 1–derived V-10 engine with more than 600 horsepower. That’s enough grunt to push the Carrera GT past 200 mph.

Porsche 918 Spyder

Porsche fills the supercar hole in its lineup with the plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid 918 Spyder. The 2015-model-year sports car offers a total of 887 horsepower and 12 miles of all-electric driving range. Despite weighing nearly 3,800 pounds, the almost seven-figure supercar clocks a quarter-mile time of 10.0 seconds in our testing.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS

The new-generation, ultimate variant of the 991-series 911 arrives for the 2018 model year. The 911 GT2 RS packs a 691-hp twin-turbocharged flat-six engine that helps the rear-engined super-coupe record a lap time of 1:21.08 around Willow Springs raceway.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4

The flat-six returns to the Cayman model line with the arrival of the 2020 718 Cayman GT4. With 414 horsepower on tap from its 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine, the 718 Cayman GT4 is arguably the epitome of Porsche’s mid-engined coupe. For now, at least.

Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

Of course, our 2019 Best Driver’s Car winner has a role in Porsche’s Super Bowl commercial. The 992-series Porsche 911 is both the latest and arguably the greatest of its kind. However, if there’s one thing missing from the car, it’s a traditional handbrake. The 443-hp Carrera 4S in “The Heist” fixes this by way of a giant rally-car-style lever. Alas, it’s an ad-specific addition that’s not available from the factory.

Porsche Taycan Turbo S

Porsche enters the electric car space with the Taycan. Available with up to 750 horsepower in Turbo S guise, the flagship Taycan trim offers an EPA-rated driving range of 192 miles and a top speed of 155 mph.
