What’s the next best thing to the Tesla Cybertruck? (And no, don’t say “something less pointy.”) How about a Tesla Cybertruck made of Legos? Proposed late last year by Lego Ideas community member BrickinNick, the Lego Cybertruck kit is inching closer to reaching store shelves, and it if it does, it’ll likely arrive sooner than the real thing and cost much, much less.
Thank the 10,000 supporters of the project who helped the brick-based Cybertruck go from a simple user-generated idea to a product that’s officially under “review” by a board of Lego employees. Don’t get your hopes too high, though, as the review stage, which begins in May and takes “several months,” doesn’t guarantee a green light. In fact—and this has nothing to do with the Lego Cybertruck’s apparent lack of bulletproofing and shatterproof glass (like the real thing)—Lego might simply blow the idea away upon reviewing it. No kit, no fun. Or not.
If the project gains approval, then it moves to the “development phase” of Lego’s ideas-to-shelves process. Lego describes this as the longest phase, and notes how it includes refinement of the idea, as well as the creation of various product materials (such as packaging and instruction manuals). In short, the Lego Cybertruck still has a long road ahead of it.
Then again, so does the Tesla Cybertruck, which isn’t due to reach production until the end of 2021. And that’s assuming everything goes to plan, and plans are something Tesla isn’t known for executing on time. Given the discrepancy between the stated and actual production dates of previous new Tesla models, it’s possible the Cybertruck won’t start rolling off factory lines until 2022 or later. So, consider us excited for the Cybertruck, be it small and made of Legos or large and stainless steel—but don’t expect to see either in the wild for quite some time, if at all.
