Known for its truck and off-road previews, the State Fair of Texas welcomes visitors from all over the country to see some of the coolest special editions, and Toyota is not far behind. The 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition is making its debut just down the road from the manufacturer’s U.S. headquarters, and comes with a new roof rack, new wheels, and a few other details that distinguish it from other 4Runner trims.

The biggest upgrade is the Yakima MegaWarrior rack that comes with a roof rack and crossbars, and it’s standard on all 4Runner Venture Editions. The steel rack includes a spacious tray that measures 52 inches in length and 48 inches in width and adds 6.5 inches to the height of the 4Runner. Those who venture out on the weekends and need the extra space for their gear will be pretty happy with this addition.

Although the Venture Edition doesn’t change much of the 4Runner’s style, the special model adds black door handles, mirror caps, rear spoiler, and badges. New 17-inch TRD wheels distinguish the Venture Edition, and its gunmetal design adds to its off-road personality.

Given that this 4Runner is designed to spend most of its time on the trails, all-weather floor mats and a rear cargo mat come standard. Like in other 4Runners, a rear sliding cargo deck is available for easier loading and unloading.

The Venture Edition comes with the new goodies that were added to the 2020 Toyota 4Runner lineup, which include a new 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, as well as a new instrument panel with a 4.2-inch screen and Toyota Safety Sense P. The latter is Toyota’s safety tech suite, which is standard on all 2020 4Runners and includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with sway warning system, automatic high beams, and high-speed adaptive cruise control.

Just like all other trims, the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition is powered by a 4.0-liter V-6 engine that produces 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic. A part-time four-wheel-drive system is standard, and it features a two-speed transfer case and a rear differential locker. Like the TRD Pro, the Venture Edition comes with Crawl control, which takes care of braking and acceleration on the trails, while the driver only focuses on the steering. Inside, the Venture Edition comes with the letters “TRD” stitched on the headrests.

While the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition brings only minimal changes to the lineup, it’s an alternative for those looking for unique styling and more storage space for their outdoor gear. Prices will be announced on a later date.
