You’ve read about it hundreds of times in MotorTrend, but what does our figure-eight test look like from behind the wheel? Jump in with testing director and figure-eight guru Kim Reynolds as he laps the all-new C8 Corvette.

Our industry exclusive figure-eight test allows us to both measure a vehicle’s acceleration, braking, and lateral grip and subjectively evaluate its transitions between each element. A quick lap time means a car isn’t just fast in the straight parts or grippy in the long corners, but that it can accelerate hard off the corner, brake hard, and dig into the next corner cleanly all without giving up too much time to understeer or oversteer. The test itself consists of two 200-foot-diameter skidpads placed 500 feet apart at their centers.

Makes sense, but what does it actually look like? We stuck some GoPros to the all-new C8 Corvette and strapped another one to Reynolds’ head before he went out so we could bring you this behind-the-wheel perspective on both the test and the car.

How did the long-awaited mid-engine Corvette actually perform in the test? That we can’t tell you yet, as it’s still under embargo. In order to beat the all-time record, it would need to be quicker than the 911 GT2 RS, which did it in just 21.9 seconds, but that car has 690 hp to the C8 Corvette’s 495. In order to be the fastest Corvette around the figure eight, it would need to beat a 22.3-second lap time shared between the C7 Z06 and C7 Grand Sport, the latter of which is less powerful than the C8 Z51 in this video but which ran the Z06’s suspension, brakes, and tires. Can the mid-engine C8 keep up? Stay tuned to find out.
