The King Ranch trim returns to the Ford Expedition lineup for 2020, having been out to pasture chewing luxurious cud since 2017. Actually, it’s been on hiatus while the Expedition was redesigned; with that taken care of for 2018, Ford has finally gotten around to bringing the fancy King Ranch trim level back and placing it like a cherry atop the updated Expedition‘s model hierarchy.

Based on the Platinum trim—which itself sees upgrades for the 2020 model year—the new King Ranch has a familiar concoction of rhinestone cowboy flair and actual luxury cred. (And, for good measure, Ford debuted the rig at the Texas State Fair in Dallas—yee-haw!) Anyway, the interior is draped with Del Rio leather (which covers all three rows of seating), there are Ziricote wood veneers, and every seat back is “emblazoned” (Ford’s word, not ours) with the signature King Ranch wavy W logo. Remember, King Ranch is an actual place, and the name is trademarked.

Ford decorates the Expedition King Ranch’s exterior with a handsome two-tone paint scheme, with the lower body, grille, and various trim bits painted Stone Gray. There are bougie extras like power-deployable side steps, machined-face 22-inch wheels, and yet more of those squiggly logos. Platinum-trim goodies include electronically adaptive dampers, MultiContour mega-adjustable front seats, power-folding and heated side mirrors, a 360-degree parking camera, and Ford Co-Pilot360 active-safety features.

Speaking of the Platinum, Ford has stuffed that version with more niceness for 2020. This is good news, given how when it launched, the latest Expedition in $70,000-plus Platinum trim came across as pricey despite not being particularly luxurious or studiously assembled. (Lesser models start at a far more reasonable $53,525). Ford has cut down on the interior’s plasticky vibe by covering much of those surfaces in leather, including the top of the dashboard and front door panels; the front and rear door armrests; and the center console. The 22-inch wheels are new, too, while current Platinum touches such as the Wollsdorf leather–wrapped steering wheel carry over.

Those pining for these range-topping 2020 Expeditions will need to wait for final pricing. Don’t expect them to be cheap—the Platinum won’t cost anything less than $70,000, and the King Ranch will be even more. Those willing to spend even more can look forward to the Platinum and King Ranch treatments being available on both the regular-body Expedition and the long-wheelbase Expedition Max.
