Elon Musk is no stranger to big claims, and he didn’t shy away from making them at at the insane Tesla Cybertruck’s recent debut. Tesla’s first electric pickup wasn’t just a shot fired across the bow of the other electric pickup upstarts at Bollinger and Rivian, it was also a full-on cruise missile salvo fired at conventional automotive design and manufacturing, and the traditional pickup truck. With a claimed maximum tow capacity of 14,000 pounds (and a surprisingly low claimed base price), we’re taking a look at how the Tesla Cybertruck stacks up against both half-ton light duty and three-quarter ton heavy duty pickups.
Before we dive into the numbers, some caveats. First off, numbers that have yet to be finalized are marked with an asterisk. Secondly, diesel 2500HD and 3500HD heavy duty trucks as well as 3500-series pickups were excluded from this list (with the exception of the electric Bollinger B2) because all can tow significantly more than the Cybertruck. And lastly, all figures quoted are the maximum conventional (not fifth-wheel or gooseneck) tow capacities for each truck; less-capable versions of each exist. With that, watch this video and then, below, find out how the Cybertruck stacks up:
