The Rubicon Recon is back. The new trim level is now available on the 2020 Jeep Wrangler, donning red and black accents and serious off-road capability.
Jeep offered the Rubicon Recon on the previous JK Wrangler, but this is the first time it has appeared on the new-generation JL model. The trim gets standard LED headlights and taillights, and a Recon badge on the fender. Several parts of the exterior receive black accents, from the grille to the hood stripe and the new 17-inch wheels. Also look for front and rear steel bumpers with bumper loops as well as Rubicon gray grille accents and headlamp inserts.
Buyers have plenty of exterior colors to choose from, including Black, Granite Crystal, Sting-Gray, Billet Silver, Ocean Blue, Bikini (bright blue), Firecracker Red, Punk’n (orange), Hellayella, and Bright White. Inside the cabin, there’s a red theme thanks to the red stitching and new red seat belts. Recon models also come with a Jeep trail bag.
Like the regular Rubicon, the Recon boasts Dana front and rear heavy-duty axles, enhanced off-road rock rails, a two-speed transfer case with a 4:0:1 low-range gear ratio, electric front and rear locking differentials, and disconnecting front sway bar. To further improve off-road capability, the Wrangler Recon sits on standard 33-inch mud terrain tires.
If you’re looking for a diesel or a gas V-6, this isn’t the Wrangler to get. All Rubicon Recon models feature Jeep’s 2.0-liter turbo-four engine with mild hybrid technology. This powertrain produces 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, and it pairs to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
So how much does this mildly improved Rubicon model cost? According to Jeep’s configurator, two-door models start at $42,875 while four-door models go from $47,875. Compare that to the regular Rubicon, which starts at $40,120 for the two-door and $43,620 for the four-door.
