This year, the Super Bowl falls on February 2, a day closely watched by those living in winter-weather states. Why? Because it’s Groundhog Day, of course! Should a groundhog see its shadow, superstition has it that winter will stretch on another six weeks. If not, bring on springtime. Jeep is capitalizing on the overlapping of the Super Bowl and Groundhog Day, theming its Big Game commercial around the movie Groundhog Day. (Watch all of this year’s Super Bowl LIV commercials right here.)
We have no idea how Jeep plans to leverage the hilarious 1993 Harold Ramis film starring Bill Murray around a Super Bowl ad, but we’re intrigued. In the movie, Murray plays droll TV weather reporter Phil Conners, who keeps waking up to the same Groundhog Day over and over again in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where he is visiting to cover the groundhog’s actions as a blizzard approaches and cuts off the town.
One of the movie’s recurring characters, Ned Ryerson, who tries to stop Murray’s Phil Conners on the street every morning—remember, time loop!—appears in a teaser video for the Super Bowl ad posted to Jeep’s YouTube account. In the clip, embedded below, Ned reprises his role, right down to his outfit and a street set mimicking Punxutawney’s, albeit with modern Dodge and Jeep vehicles in the background. And, yes, he’s as nerdy and annoying as ever. A second teaser depicts the alarm clock in Phil Conners’s hotel room rolling over to display 6:00 a.m. and playing Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe,” again, just like in the Groundhog Day movie.
Might Bill Murray himself make an appearance? We’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out. In the meantime, watch the teasers below, and check out the other spots being run by automakers here:
