We feel as though this story should be bellowed through a hanging microphone like the announcements at a title fight, so try to imagine the words booming forth that way as you read it. In one corner, from Palo Alto, California, we have new-kid Tesla, whose new Cybertruck electric pickup truck was just revealed with a video of it pummeling a Ford F-150 in a game of tug-of-war, dragging the best-selling pickup backwards, supposedly up a hill, its tires spinning futilely in search of traction. Aaaand in the other corner, from Dearborn, Michigan, with 116 years of experience building cars, we have Ford, which is challenging Tesla to a rematch!
This isn’t a joke—as Bloomberg brought to our attention, the two automakers just publicly agreed to chain the new Cybertruck to an F-150, on fair terms, and let the two try and yank each other in half. If you’re wondering how the heck this came to be, the short answer is Twitter. Tesla really did show a video at the Cybertruck’s reveal of it beating an F-150 in a game of tug-of-war, easily. Then, Tesla’s ever-swaggering CEO Elon Musk tweeted that multimedia smack-talk on his account, where it caught the attention of Sunny Madra, vice president of Ford Motor Company’s Ford X emerging-tech division. Madra quite boldly tweeted back at Musk: “hey, [Elon] send us a Cybertruck and we will do the apples to apples test for you.”

From what we understand from twitter chatter, Madra is referring to the imbalanced comparison of what appears to be a rear-drive F-150 (or four-wheel-drive model with its part-time four-wheel-drive disengaged) against an all-wheel-drive Tesla Cybertruck. Indeed, in Tesla’s stunt, the silver F-150 can be seen spinning its rear tires, while its fronts seem to roll backwards freely. With the added traction of a four-wheel-drive Ford, one could imagine the tug-of-war’s outcome might be different. Or, perhaps not—Elon Musk certainly feels confident, because he tweeted back at Madra “Bring it on.”
We can’t imagine Elon would actually deliver a Cybertruck to Ford and let ’em have a rematch without supervision. Ford, which is working on an electric F-150, surely would love to tear that truck apart and reverse-engineer its exciting bits. But, it sounds as if Tesla will participate in Ford’s challenge, and that, people, is something we’d all like to see. Let’s get ready to rumbbbleee!
