We’ll admit it; we’re not fans of some of the kitschy features Tesla adds to its vehicles. For instance, do you really need your electric car to make a farting noise or for a Super Mario-inspired “rainbow road” graphic to appear in the gauge cluster? (No, you don’t.) Sentry Mode, however, is one of the automaker’s more functional widgets. The system relies on the car’s exterior-mounted cameras to detect and record anything potentially deemed a threat, such as a break-in. Or in the case of YouTube user Fernando C, strangers trying to remove the charging cable from his parked Tesla’s charging port.
What starts as a simple attempt to break into Fernando C’s Sentry Mode–enabled Tesla quickly turns into a battle between man and machine, as two men repeatedly tug at the charging cable in (what we presume to be) an attempt at unlocking the car.
Fortunately, it’s the car that ultimately wins, as Sentry Mode eventually sets the vehicle’s alarm off and scares the would-be thieves away while—likely unbeknownst to the bad guys—simultaneously sending a push notification to the Tesla owner’s mobile app alerting him to the incident. (We’re assuming the YouTube-savvy Fernando C is the type of Tesla owner to download the mobile app.) So, sure, while we might not see the point of Tesla features such as Fart Mode, count us among the Sentry Mode believers. Hopefully, someone recognizes these vandals and reports them to the police before they attempt to break into someone else’s car.
