Alfa Romeo‘s new Giulia GTA, a car with equal measures of rear wing and chutzpah, is likely to be a polarizing thing. It’s bold, brash, and—given a close look at these design sketches—definitely intended to be both of those things. These illustrations just go to show how much the new bits—particularly the harder-core GTAm version’s outrageous fender flares, sky-scraping wing, and massive rear diffuser—transform the Giulia Quadrifoglio from a muscular Italian sport sedan to an in-your-face bruiser.
Curious how Alfa Romeo arrived at the GTA’s look? The Italian automaker released some extra design sketches to us beyond those it dropped when the GTA was announced (we included those original drawings here, as well). Note that the two-seat layout isn’t just a concept exercise to inspire the designers; The ultra-hardcore GTAm sports only two carbon fiber racing seats, a roll bar, a Sabelt six-point harness, and even more aggressive aero than the already formidable GTA. Even the empty area where the rear seats used to be is put to good use, with slots for a fire extinguisher and racing helmets.
Remember, the GTA and GTAm are limited-edition models—just 500 units will be built, and we’re not even sure that Alfa will break off any for North America yet. So, if you’re not that into their wild alterations, you can always head to your local Alfa Romeo dealer and plop some cash down on a regular ol’ Giulia Quadrifoglio. If you are picking up what the Alfa GTA is putting down, well, you might not be able to touch one unless you’re in Europe and quick on the reservations trigger. These sketches, along with Alfa Romeo’s limited photos (well, seemingly high-quality renderings) of the real car may be as close as any of us ever get to the 2021 Giulia GTA and GTAm, so, uh, enjoy:
