Move over EarthRoamer and make room for another mighty overland RV behemoth: the SLRV Commander 8×8. This two-story monster sports a powered two-story roof, casts a shadow that’s 39.4 feet long, and offers enough space to fit a family of eight with room to spare. In fact, a large family that wanted to travel the Australian Outback together for months at a time commissioned and designed this monster of a recreational vehicle.
“[A] build generally takes 12 to 14 months from order but may vary depending on build complexity,” SLRV co-founder Warwick Boswerger wrote in an email.
The bespoke beast includes a master suite fit for a king or queen with a full bathroom and a huge kitchen on the first level. What differentiates this colossal camper even more, though, is its 6.5-foot retractable roof that transforms the military-grade luxe truck into double-decker digs. Floating stairs lead up to the second floor, which offers a total of six twin beds with storage underneath each for gear, as well as two retractable TV monitors. Back downstairs, there’s an electrically operated bed that stows above the galley for last-minute guests.
The Queensland-based builder is a family-run operation specializing in self-sufficient luxury 4×4 motorhomes built to conquer any terrain. The monster truck you see here is spun from the company’s popular Commander 4×4 model, and starts with a MAN TGS 8×8 rig with a two-speed transfer case and four differential locks. The truck packs a diesel-swilling 12.5-liter six-cylinder engine with 480 horsepower and 1,646 lb-ft of torque. A 12-speed automatic transmission sends that grunt to the ground by way of an all-wheel-drive system.
There’s no limit to customer requests, either, and SLRV can trick out your Commander 8×8’s galley with an induction cooktop, an oven, two microwaves, and a marine compressor fridge. There’s plenty of space for appliances, too, including central A/C and heaters, a four-monitor entertainment system, satellite TV, internet, and anything you need for your really big home away from home.
Externally, the rig features a washing machine, grill, sink, winch, roof rack, skylights, and multiple water tanks. Depending on the configuration, the truck can hold between 133 and 264 gallons of water. There’s a 48-volt solar panel system on the roof, as well as a Cummins diesel generator to supply additional power. Pricing for this dream townhouse on wheels starts at $899,500 and goes up from there.
